Wind Uplift Design for Roofing

How to create a code compliant project

Presented by

Dave Miller

Senior Manager Codes and Approvals, IKO Industries

Wind uplift in low slope roofing is a big deal. Such a big deal that over 25 years ago a consortium was created in collaboration with the National Research Council of Canada under the name Special Interest Group for Dynamic Evaluation of Roofing Systems (SIGDERS). That consortium developed a method and apparatus to test materials and roofing assemblies against dynamic wind uplift forces. The Canadian Standard Association adopted the method as CSA A123.21 Standard Test Method for the Dynamic Wind Uplift Resistance of membrane Roofing Systems to assist designers in designing and selecting the roofing assemblies to meet the project requirements.

This presentation will teach the attendees about the current state of the industry pertaining to wind loads on low slope roofs. Historic and current methods to quantify wind resistance of flexible membrane roofing systems will be discussed. The presenter will chart the process for using CAN/CSA A123.21-14 to create code compliant projects under the Ontario Building Code and the National Building Code of Canada.
