Calgary Speed Skating Association 2010 Membership

Group Descriptions:                                                 

Cradle:

Target Age: 5 and under
Ability level: Beginner pin level 0-4*


This group of skaters will be skating the same program as the SPD 4 skaters, since these are the youngest skaters, we encourage the skaters to come out a maximum of two sessions a week and play other sports too.

 

Fees:    
Club membership fee Cradle   $175
Oval Access card, age 5 and under   $125

 

SPD 4:

Target age: 6 – 9 years old

Ability level: Beginner pin level 0-4*

This is the group that young kids would start in, main focus is getting comfortable on the ice and have fun while learning the basics of speed skating. Some skating experience is beneficial, but not a requirement. This group is based on both chronological and developmental age, speed, and skill level. For optimal skill development skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan. This group of skaters is encouraged to attend practices once or twice a week and have other activities aside from speed skating.

Oval Access 6 – 19 years  $250

Tuesdays 6.20 - 8.00pm LT
Fridays 4.30 – 5.45pm ST
Sundays 12.00 – 1.15pm ST

 

SPD 3 b:

Target age: 8 – 11 years old

Ability level: Beginner pin level 4-6*

The main target for this group is getting comfortable on the ice, working on more technical speed skating skills in a fun way. Some skating experience is beneficial, but not a requirement. This group is based on both chronological and developmental age, speed, and skill level. For optimal skill development skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan. This group of skaters is encouraged to attend practices 1-3 times a week and have other activities aside from speed skating.

Club  fee SPD 3 $300
Oval Access 6 – 19 years $250

Practice times:  
Tuesdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Wednesdays 7.15 – 8.30pm ST
Thursdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Saturdays 6.30 – 8.30pm ST

 

SPD 3 a:

Target age: 8 – 11 years old

Ability level: Beginner pin level 6-8*

This group is for skaters who have some previous speed skating experience and wish to work on reaching the next level in speed skating skills. The focus for this group will also lean more towards competitive skating.  This group is based on both chronological and developmental age, speed, and skill level. For optimal skill development skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan. This group is encouraged to attend 2 – 4 sessions a week, preferably one Long Track and one Short Track session.

Mondays 4.30 – 5.45pm ST
Tuesdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Thursdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Saturdays 4.45 – 6.15pm ST


SPD 2 b:

Target age: 12 – 17 years old

Ability level: Beginner pin level 0-8*

This group is for beginner speed skaters that meet the target age, and for skaters who have not reached PIN level 8 in speed skating. SPD 2b is a diverse group offering a progression from SPD 3, but also a transition to the demand of high performance programming in SPD 2a. For optimal skill development, skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan. Skaters in SPD2b should be able to commit to at least 2 sessions per week, the Lead Coach might decide there is an off ice warm-up program 45-30 minutes prior to practice.

This group is build to meet the needs of cross-over training from hockey, ringette, figure skating, cross-country skiing and similar sports, to learn speed skating from the start until high-performance level.

(Coaches might decide to do a group warm-up, prior to the ice sessions, this would be 45-30 minutes prior to stated times)


SPD 2 a:

Target age: 12 – 17 years old

Ability level: Pin level 8 and up*

Skaters that perform in SPD 2 a have gained speed skating experience and build upon their experience from SPD 3. The focus for SPD 2 a is to work on technical and competitive skills. It is also a transition to the demand of high performance programming in SPD 1. This group is based on both chronological and developmental age, speed, and skill level.

For optimal skill development, skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan. Skaters in SPD2a  should be able to commit to at least 3 sessions per week and should be able to make ice sessions 45-30 minutes prior for warm-up.

Oval Access 6 – 19 years $250

Mondays 6.00 – 7.15pm ST
Tuesdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Thursdays 6.20 – 8.00pm LT
Fridays 6.00 – 7.15pm ST
Sundays 10.20 – 11.40a LT


SPD 1:

Target age: 13 – 18 years old

Ability level: Pin level Gold*

The skaters in SPD 1 are chosen to perform in this group. There is an increase in competitions for this group with a transition to programming demands of a high performance skater. Skaters will be exposed to detailed and individualized goal setting which will focus on building upon their skills gained in SPD 2. This group is based on both chronological and developmental age, speed, and skills level. Athletes in SPD 1 must also display a readiness (both physical and mental) to participate in the demands of a high performance program which include; increase in volume and intensity, participation in identified competitions, year round programming, testing and monitoring for performance and recovery. For optimal skill development skaters are encouraged to participate in both Long and Short Track development as recommended by Speed Skating Canada’s Long-Term Athlete Development plan.
Skaters in SPD1 should be able to attend the ice sessions required by the Lead coach, as well as dry land, warm up and other program.

Adult SPD 1-2:

Adult SPD 1-2 stands for the amount of times a skater wishes to have coached on-ice sessions with the club. It embraces both the recreational skater and those with specific competitive goals. This group has skaters that are 18+. All skaters will build upon their speed skating skills to reach their individual goals. Goals will be created by the skater, our coaching team and each skater's programming will be designed to achieve these goals. Programs include the ability to participate in both Long and Short Track programs.

Fees:  
Adult SPD 1-2 $210
Oval Access fees $275


Adult SPD 3-4:

Adult SPD 3-4 stands for the amount of times a skater wishes to have coached on-ice sessions with the club. It embraces both the recreational skater and those with specific competitive goals. All skaters will build upon their speed skating skills to reach their individual goals. Goals will be created by the skater, our coaching team and each skater's programming will be designed to achieve these goals. Programs include the ability to participate in both Long and Short Track programs. The group is 18+.

Fees:  
Adult SPD 3-4 $425
Oval Access fees $350

Adult ST Ice times

Mondays 9.00 – 10.15pm
Tuesdays 9.15 – 10.30pm
Wednesdays 8.45 – 10.15pm
Thursdays 8.45 – 10.15pm

Adult LT Ice times

Mondays 8.30 – 10.00pm
Tuesdays 8.30 – 10.30pm
Wednesdays 6.20 – 8.00pm
Sundays 10.20 -11.40am


Associate Membership:

Any member under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign up as an Associate member of the club for insurance purposes, no exceptions.

Fees:  
Associate Membership $35


No Coaching/High Performance:

This membership is for adults (masters) who wish to come out and only skate laps during adult long track ice times.  They are recreational skaters who have a skating back ground and do not want instruction. This includes no coaching from our coaching team during competitions.

The High Performance membership is for those skaters who are in Link, OP or on the National Team who still need to upkeep a club membership year to year, complying with Speed Skating Canada’s rules. 

Fees:  
No Coaching/High-performance $75

Coaching/Official

This membership is meant for our coaches and officials, who require an SSC# for their (volunteer) work and insurance purposes. Please contact the Club Manager before signing up under this membership type: calspeed(at)ucalgary.ca or 403.220.4417.

 

Volunteer Commitment

Since we are a volunteer association, we do ask all members to volunteer. We ask that all members write a cheque to CSSA for the amount of $300 for single member or $400 for a family post dated to April 30, 2011 and agree to participate 15-30 hours in volunteer activities, such as Club Meets, Registration, Equipment Room, Social Events, etc. per season.

If the requirements of 15 – 30 hours a season are not met, CSSA will deposit the check on April 30, 2011.
