'Navigating the New CSA Standard for Performance Requirements for Climate Resilience of Low Slope Membrane Roofing Systems'

February was another amazing educational topic with a very engaged audience. It wouldn't be a Toronto Chapter Season without checking in on what's cool in the roofing industry. Or those ever changing standards.

Presentation Description:

Douglas Fishburn is part of a working group who has been reviewing the intent of the new CSA A123.26 – Performance Requirements for Climate Resilience of Low Slope Membrane Roofing Systems. The standard, which was developed by the NRC in collaboration with the North American roofing community, provides holistic solutions to increase roof resiliency in the face of climate change, and is intended to be used by building designers, building owners, building code officials, product manufacturers, and installers.

This presentation will provide an overview of the framework of the standard, including the climate zone severity classes, the roof resilience indices, and Climate RCI tool. Further, it will dive into the application of the standard, including guidance on strategies to improve the durability of roofing systems in anticipation of increased severity of weather events. Information including design criteria, enhancements, inspection and testing requirements, along with practical case studies, will illustrate some of the requirements needed to meet the standard, as it pertains to wind and rain.

Roofs are not immune to the effects of climate change and will continue to be major contributors for insurance claims when subjected to weather events. CSA A123.26 will provide the guidance to ensure that roofs will continue to function well in the long term.
