Designing Safer Glass Railings with Laminated Glass

Presented by: Mark Jacobson, CSI, Kuraray America, Inc.

Incidents of falling glass from exterior balcony railings in high-rise condominiums have resulted in new standards and building code requirements that address post-breakage performance of glass.  While tempered glass is an approved safety glazing, it does not provide glass retention after breakage.  As a result, many railing specifications are calling for laminated glass to provide safety from falling glass.  This presentation will examine the safety concerns around glass in railing systems and the new building code requirements that address the use of these systems.  The results of impact testing will be presented.  In addition, the need to verify the compatibility of sealants and grouts will be discussed.

Learn about different glass types used in railing systems, laminated glass interlayers and the role they play in glass retention after breakage. Identify building codes and standards that are directed toward glass railings in buildings. Recognize the difference in post-breakage performance of glass types in minimally supported glass systems. Recognize the importance of verifying compatibility of grouts and sealants that come in contact with laminated glass and in specifying the quality of laminated glass.

Mark is the Market Manager in North America for Trosifol interlayers from Kuraray.  He has been involved in the laminated glass industry for the last 10 years focusing on architectural applications and the photovoltaic industry.  Mark provides training for architects, designers, engineers, and contractors on laminated glass.  He also serves on ASTM and NGA committees for glazing and is a member of CSI.  He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University and worked for DuPont for over 35 years prior to his 4 years with Kuraray.
