Not In Kansas Anymore: Designing Wind-Resistant Membrane Roofs

Presented by James Klassen

RoofStar Technical Advisor and Staff Writer – RCABC

James Klassen is a RoofStar Technical Advisor and staff writer with the Roofing Contractors Association of British Columbia. As a keen proponent of vegetated roofs, James serves as a co-chair of the Green Roofing Information Think-tank (GRiT) and contributes to education and policy development for sustainable ‘green roof’ design. He is an experienced roofing estimator, a former Occupational Health and Safety professional and independent Insurance Claims Adjuster, and has extensive experience managing facilities and transportation for a large private school in British Columbia’s Fraser Valley.

Not in Kansas Anymore: Designing Wind-Resistant Membrane Roofs:

In December 2018 the BC Government released the latest edition of the British Columbia Building Code.  New to the Code are detailed requirements for the design and construction of wind-resistant low-slope roofs.  This presentation explores the reasons behind the changes, examines the design requirements of the BCBC, and reviews the options available to the Design Authority, for calculating wind-inducing roof loads and designing roof systems that will stay where they’re built.
