Effective Approaches to Acoustical Challenges in Mass Timber Buildings
Presented by Kiyoshi Kuroiwa, CCCA - Aercoustics Engineering
Activity Summary:
This presentation explores acoustical challenges associated with mass timber construction and the impact of exposed wood structure and evolving fire code requirements on sound performances. Through build case studies, attendees will learn practical design and detailing strategies for achieving acoustic targets while maintaining architectural intent in commercial, residential and institutional mass timber buildings.
Objectives:
- Analyze acoustic performances ricks inherent to mass timber construction, including the effects of exposed wood structure, building occupancy type and current and emerging fire code requirements on sound separations.
- Assess and select acoustical design and detailing strategies for mass timber buildings that achieve required performance criteria while maintaining architectural intent and constructability.
- Integrate acoustical lessons learned from constructed mass timber case studies into architectural decision-making; including coordination with specifications, consultants and construction processes.
Kiyoshi Kuroiwa, CCCA, Acoustic Engineer
Aercoustics Engineering

Kiyoshi has 25 years of acoustics design and construction experience. Over the past decade, Kiyoshi has helped develop with painstaking rigor acoustic details and specifications to ensure that the contract documents accurately represent the acoustical design.
As the head of Aercoustic dedicated Contract Administration department Kiyoshi helps to ensure the original acoustical design intent is adhered to while being nimble to modify designs to suit site specific challenges that occur during construction. Kiyoshi's collaborative approach of education and contract interpretation is highly sought after to ensure everyone is on the same beat.
Kiyoshi has worked on wide variety of projects including healthcare, performing art centres, and institutional projects. Some of Kiyoshi's career highlights with mass timber structures include the Wood Innovation Design Centre in Prince George BC, Centennial College A Block in Scarborough ON, Trinity College Residence in Toronto ON, and Humber College Cultural Hub in Toronto ON.
