Thunder Lake

Quand: Sam, 27-Jul-2024 09:00 - Dim, 28-Jul-2024 14:00

Où: 4921 49 St, Onoway, AB

Skill level/Type/Appropriate bike: Social, Overnight, Intermediate, Road

Ride Description: Thunder Lake is an intermediate cycling/camping weekend ride, fully-supported. We meet at the Shell station in Onoway at 9AM Saturday morning and ride approximately 75K on Saturday and 85K on Sunday. There will be a sweep; the pace is relaxed (15-20K/hr) and no one gets left behind. There will be eating opportunities every 20 – 30K.

We’re doing the route backwards from 2023.

Our first stop will be at 25K at Rich Valley for snacks, 55K at Barrhead for lunch and dinner at Thunder Lake Provincial Park campground 80.4K day 1. Volunteers will be solicited for easy food prep tasks. Swimming depends on algae so check at the campground office, or relax and start “hydrating" immediately upon arriving at the campsite.

On Sunday, breakfast will be at the campsite, snacks at 20K at Meadowview, lunch at Cherhill at 40K, snacks at 60K at Darnell, coffee shop at 80K at Alberta beach, finish at Onoway at 93K. I expect we’ll be done by 4-5PM.

Bring loonies for a shower and extra if you want coffee and a treat in Alberta Beach and/or ice cream when you arrive at the campground.

Accommodations: Thunder Lake Campground in Thunder Lake Provincial Park

Riding: A century over two days on pavement, a combination of highways and country roads, mainly flat. The support vehicle can accommodate two bicycles if someone is unable to ride or needs a break. The leader will bring their personal vehicle with room for two additional bicycles and riders.

Fees Include: Meals, accommodation/campsite, food, support vehicle that carries tents and a small bag for each registrant (clothing, bike supplies, “beverages”).

Fees do not include: Coffee break on Saturday, ice cream when we arrive at the campground, loonies for shower at campsite, breakfast at A&W on Sunday, and “beverages”.

n/a - There will be a trip planning meeting for registered participants approximately two to three weeks before trip departure. More detailed information will be shared at that time. Date to be determined.

Itinerary:

Day 1 Our first stop will be at 18K at Alberta Beach or 25 K at Gunn for coffee. Lunch (at 50K in Cherhill) and dinner (at Thunder Lake Provincial Park campground) are provided and mostly pre-prepared; volunteers will be solicited for easy tasks (husking corn, tossing salad, washing up). Swimming depends on algae so check at the campground office, or relax and start “hydrating" immediately upon arriving at the campsite.

Day 2 On Sunday, coffee and a light snack will be provided to get you to Barrhead (21K) where we buy our own breakfast at the A&W. There will be one last rest stop with snacks, and we're usually done between 2 – 3PM.
