Virtual Weekend Clubs - Fall 2020

When: Sat, 17-Oct-2020 - Sat, 28-Nov-2020

Science AL!VE will be running Virtual Fall Weekend Clubs for grades 2-3 and grades 4-5. 

Note: Students should register based on the grade that they are attending in the 2020-2021 school year. 

Weekend Clubs will occur ONLINE WEEKLY starting from Saturday, October 17th to Saturday, November 28th. 

Program Dates: October 17, 24, 31; November 7, 14, 21, 28.

Grade 2-3: Sessions run from 10:00am to 11:30am 

Grade 4-5: Sessions run from 1:00pm to 2:30pm 

Program Cost: $175 (Physical Weekend Club activity kits will be provided)


WEEKEND CLUB - GRADE 2,3

Science AL!VE’s Grade 2-3 Virtual Fall Weekend Club will explore the worlds of forensics and engineering. Student scientists will learn how to analyze and think critically by sorting and classifying forensic data and information. In addition, student scientists will consider the physical laws of science as they engineer solutions to real-world problems in our virtual makerspace. Our instructors will guide students in interactive, hands-on activities where students will:

  • Learn about the field of forensic science by becoming detectives and uncovering the mystery of who stole the Science AL!VE slime.

    • Learning outcomes include:

      • Define and understand the importance of forensic science

      • Successfully taking and identifying fingerprints by examining evidence left at a crime scene

      • Understand how to analyze handwriting and how it is unique to each individual

  • Learn about the field of engineering by participating in a design challenge where youth will ask questions; analyze and interpret data and work together with the classmates.

    • Learning outcomes include:

      • Understanding the strength and weakness of bridges by building a structure out of limited materials

      • Examine simple machines such as a pulley systems and engineering your own

    NOTE: IF YOUR CHILD HAS ATTENDED OUR FANTASTIC FORENSICS CAMP IN THE SUMMER OF 2020, SOME CONCEPTS TAUGHT DURING THIS WEEKEND CLUB MAY BE REPEATED, HOWEVER, MOST ACTIVITIES WILL BE BRAND-NEW.

WEEKEND CLUB - GRADE 4,5

Weekend club - grade 4,5

Science AL!VE’s Grade 4-5 Virtual Fall Weekend club will explore the world of super-science where power has no limit and the field of genetics. Student scientists will learn the science behind common chemical reactions. In addition, student scientists will develop their molecular biology and problem-solving skills such as DNA sequencing to solve a dinner-party murder mystery. Our instructors will guide students in interactive, hands-on activities where students will:

  • Learn about the field of genetics by working together to find out who did it?  

    • Learning outcomes include:

      • Define and understand the importance of forensic science

      • Successfully taking and identifying fingerprints by examining evidence left at a crime scene

      • Understand how to analyze handwriting and how it is unique to each individual

    Note: The workshop scenario is FICTITIOUS and the purpose is for students to learn different components of forensic science

  • Learn about chemical reactions

  • Learning outcomes include:

    • Understanding acids and bases by creating testing out the acid content of kitchen foods

    • Find out the chemistry behind the density of liquids by making Halloween lava lamps

Note: If your child has attended our WONDERous Wizards and Biotechnology Camp in the Summer of 2020, some concepts taught during this Weekend Club may be repeated, however, most activities will be brand-new.
