Leveraging AI in the Construction Industry

When: Tue, 24-Mar-2026 12:00

Where: 1447 Waverley Street, Winnipeg, MB

TUESDAY MARCH 24 from 12PM to 2PM
Winnipeg Construction Association - 1447 Waverley Street

The AI Inflection Point Is Here

Why the next winners in construction will look different.

AI is everywhere in construction right now. People can feel there is real upside here, and they are right. The catch is that most teams are aiming at the wrong thing.  What passes for “AI progress” today is often impressive demos. They look great in controlled conditions, then break the moment they meet the jobsite. Not because the models are weak, but because construction information is fragmented, inconsistent, and full of gaps.

For decades, we have depended on people to bridge those gaps by hand, connecting drawings, specs, schedules, RFIs, submittals, photos, field notes, and closeout records into something usable. That glue work is costly, slow, and impossible to scale the way the industry wants.

In this talk, Penn-co Technology Manager Matthew Heinrichs shares what Penn-co is doing to close the gaps that matter, using practical tools and workflows that hold up in the real world. You will leave with a clearer view of where the industry is actually headed, why many AI efforts stall, and what separates real project results from hype.

Matthew Heinrichs is the Technology Manager at Penn-co Construction, where he leads IT, Construction Technology, and the Business Systems & Innovation group across the organization.

Over the past seven years, he has built and overseen teams responsible for ERP systems, cybersecurity, field technology, remote site networks, reality capture, drones, data strategy, and BIM integration.

Penn-co employs 500-600 people and delivers complex infrastructure projects including hospitals, schools, airports, and water and wastewater treatment facilities, many located in some of Canada's most remote northern communities. Supporting projects across Canadas far reaches requires technology systems that perform reliably in demanding and distributed environments.

Matt began his career in computer programming and broadcast engineering before transitioning into construction. His early interest in spatial visualization and reality capture dates back to 2008. A certified Advanced Drone Pilot, he has trained more than 55 pilots in safe flight operations across Canada.

He is passionate about bridging field operations with practical, outcome-driven technology that reduces uncertainty and strengthens project delivery.
